PRIORITY AND STEWARDSHIP AREAS MAP
HTA realized early on its formation that a key to successful establishment and maintenance of trails will require prioritizing areas for work in the next five years. This map shows the key areas identified by HTA as priorities for improving and building new trail easements. Prioritizing areas is important as the Homer area is large, roughly about 240 square miles; and there are lots of various trails, mostly not established or with easements. In addition to the challenge of a large area, finding the resources to build and maintain trails is a huge challenge. The best approach seems to be one of stewardship—finding people who care about a particular area and are willing to fight for it, take care of it, and look to the future. The trail is most likely in their neighborhood, so they know it and the area.
The areas shown on this map are chosen based for priority on what can be accomplished successfully in a five-year time frame in terms of:
- Physical building and establishing trails
- Establishing easements
- Establishing funding and official endorsement of the trail route
The trail detail areas shown here—Areas 1—5—illustrate in more detail the land ownership, topography, and other aspects.
